IMPROVE YOUR PLAY

With Larry Matheny

Preemptive bids often goad opponents into making bad bids.  Sometimes preempts work and you just have to accept that.

Bidding:  After East’s weak 2D bid, South made a very poor overcall.  North bid game wondering if perhaps a slam had been missed.

Play:  West led the 10 of diamonds and declarer was quickly in trouble.  He ruffed in dummy followed by the king and another heart.  He managed to score only 7 tricks for a poor score.  South was much too weak to overcall at the two-level.  He was so determined to make sure the opponents didn’t take advantage of him that he forgot he had a partner to protect him.
