IMPROVE YOUR PLAY

With Larry Matheny

Some people make a bid because they can, not because they should.  This hand shows it’s not always wise to preempt.

Bidding:  After South’s weak jump overcall, East reopened with a takeout double and West passed for penalties.

Play:  West led a low club and the defense soon collected 7 tricks: 1 spade, 4 diamonds, and 2 clubs.  Down two for +300 was a top result for E/W.  Most of the E/W pairs played in a club partscore and scored +130.

There were at least two reasons against bidding 2D; the suit wasn’t that good and the South hand is a great dummy for a spade contract.
